Placentia History
The town of Placentia first attracted early settlers in 1865. Daniel Kraemer, who bought 3900 acres in 1865, was the first pioneer. William McFadden and his wife, Sarah Jane, purchased an additional 100 acres in the region three years later. In the ensuing years, a large number of new settlers arrived. As the settlement grew, residents constructed schools and churches.
Citrus production flourished in Placentia, and in 1910, A.S. Bradford persuaded the Santa Fe Railroad to run a line through the town. The citrus business in the city led to the development of a packing house and railroad station. Bradford was also the one who designed Placentia's street layout. Apart from citrus orchards, the city was also a producer of avocados, walnuts, and grapes.
Northern Orange County, California is home to the city of Placentia. The population increased from 46,488 in the 2000 census to 51,233 in 2020. This encompasses the neighborhood of Atwood, which is situated in the southeast corner of the city of Placentia. Placentia is mostly recognized as a bedroom community because of its peaceful surroundings.
Placentia was bestowed with the coveted "All America City" distinction in 1971. The National Civic League bestows this accolade on ten American cities each year.
One of Orange County's smaller cities, Placentia is primarily recognized for having been the site of the county's first Valencia orange plantings, which turned it become a lucrative crop. The Latin term from which the name Placentia originates means "pleasant place to live."
The city of Placentia is currently in the process of constructing multiple new developments and improving existing developments around the city. Some of the most notable developments include the Placentia Veterans Village, the Alta Vista and Rose Drive Development, and the revitalization of the Sierra Vista Plaza Shopping Center.
Placentia’s old town district is also getting rehabilitative attention. The city is revitalizing the area by restoring historic elements, developing pedestrian-friendly areas, drawing in new and unique businesses, making facade improvements to commercial buildings, and developing a new Metrolink Station.
